Found on the slopes of the Virunga ranges, Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park and probably the most scenic. These ranges that start in Uganda and roll on into the DRC offer a breathtaking view. Three defunct volcanoes make up the part of the Virunga ranges that are found in Uganda. The tallest of the three is Mountain Muhavura which goes up to an altitude of 4127 metres above sea level. Muhavura, loosely translated from the local dialect, means the guide. It was aptly named so, in the olden days because it used to act as a guide to wary travelers as it could be seen from miles away.The volcanoes’ slopes contain various ecosystems and are biologically diverse, and their peaks provide a striking backdrop to this gorgeous scenery
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m. As its name suggests, it was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests, and it is also an important habitat for the endangered golden monkey. Other wildlife found in the National park includes primates like the Guereza colobus and golden (blue) monkey, Caruther’s mountain, Boehm’s and Rwenzori sun squirrels can be seen along for gorilla tracking safaris. Mgahinga forms part of the much larger Virunga Conservation Area which includes adjacent parks in these countries. The volcanoes’ slopes contain various ecosystems and are biologically diverse, and their peaks provide a striking backdrop to this gorgeous scenery.
To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to book your permits for gorilla tracking in Uganda, three months in advance. Bigger mammals such as buffaloes, Bushbuck and surprisingly Elephants are fairly common. Other animals that are mainly nocturnal include the Serval cat, Side-striped jackal, honey badger and striped weasel.
